by Tara Kuczykowski on December 2, 2008 · 1,258 comments

Nickelodeon
I’ve hinted about it for days now, and finally here it is – your chance to win a $500 Walmart gift card!!!

walmart-500-gift-cardJust in time to make your holidays a little happier, Nickelodeon and Walmart have teamed up to offer this fabulous contest hosted by the Elevenmoms.

Yep, that’s right – each Elevenmom is giving away one $500 gift card on her blog, so you have 20 chances to win! Find details on the Elevenmoms site on how you can enter to win each one. Please note that you may only win once.

So who wants to add $500 to their holiday budget? You didn’t really think I was going to make this EASY for you, did you? You’re going to have to work a little bit for a prize this big.

In light of the tough economic times, this contest is all about discovering new ways to help each other save money. Yesterday I wrote a post detailing seven easy ways to cut at least $1 from your budget per day in the hopes that it would inspire you to participate in The One Dollar Give. I only just scratched the surface though, and I know that you all have some amazing tips to share as well.

So there you go – holiday-themed or not, I want you to share your best methods for cutting back by at least $1 a day!

Methods of Entry*

Every reader can submit up to three (3) different tips to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, or three for up to a total of 3 entries!!!

YOU MUST LEAVE A TIP WITH EACH ENTRY. ENTRIES THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES BELOW WILL BE DELETED.

1. Leave a comment sharing your best money-saving tip to cut at least $1 a day out of your budget!

2. Subscribe to my feed via RSS or email and leave a separate comment letting me know you have done so along with another money-saving tip. If you’re already a subscriber, simply leave a separate comment letting me know you’re already subscribed along with another money-saving tip. Lovin’ my subscribers! You guys make this all possible.

3. Spread the word about this contest in some manner and come back and leave a link in a separate comment along with another money-saving tip. If you have a blog, you can blog about it. But if you don’t have a blog, you’re not at a disadvantage. You could review and Stumble it. You could Twitter it. You could post about it in a forum. Use your imagination!

*Please read the rules for entering and the timeline information carefully as this contest differs from the usual giveaways that I host.

It is important that you leave a separate comment for each type of entry because each comment is equal to one entry. Sorry to harp on this, but it really is that important to tally and select the winner easily, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me simplify the process!

Prize:
1 $500 Walmart Gift Card

This giveaway ends at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Monday, December 15th. The judges will select ten of their favorite entries to be highlighted on Deal Seeking Mom, and I’ll use Random.org to select the winning comment.  The winner will be posted on Tuesday, December 16th, and the prize will be mailed out on December 17th. Good luck!

While you’re in a contest entering mood, don’t forget to check out the Giveaway Gathering for a variety of contests being hosted on Deal Seeking Mom readers’ blogs!

I have subscribed…..for my second way I save more than a $1.00 a day. I changed my work schedule to a four day work week. I live 43 miles one way to work, so the gas alone is a savings. Plus, the wear and tear on the vehicle, and the cost of daycare for that day.

Avoid Sonic between 2pm and 4pm. You don’t have to have a soda every day, Lori!!! Even if it is happy hour. LOL And….making sure you really do know where you are going when traveling to somewhere new. You can waste a lot of gas by guessing and not planning ahead.

Thanks for the opportunity.

Skip the Starbucks and brew at home!

6 vanessa December 14, 2008 at 10:40 pm

I try to plan my trips to the grocery so that I only go once a week. The more times a week I go, the more I buy that I don’t need! So, cutting back on my trips to the store definitely saves me money!

Sell your stuff on craigslist or ebay! It is amazing how much money I can get from stuff that I just really don’t need!

8 vanessa December 14, 2008 at 10:43 pm

I always try to make just a little bit extra dinner each night so that my husband can take it to work with him and not have to eat out for lunch. Packing his lunch saves us quite a bit of money.
Thanks!

Read websites for the news instead of getting newspapers and magazines.

10 Kori December 14, 2008 at 11:04 pm

No more hot lunches for the kids. We pack their lunches for school and have been able to save tons.

Food for thought, literally! My money saving tip to save a dollar a day is to always always shop with coupons. I use a website that features all my local stores best deals and what coupons are out there to use with them to maximize the best deal. If you use at least 30 coupons a month that total a dollar a coupon or more coupons if they total less than a dollar, you will save at least a dollar a day, if not more. I use at least 20 coupons a week. Try it, you’ll be surprised!

13 Kristi December 14, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Money saving tip is to stop eating out. Take time to plan meals based on grocery store sale flyers and stock up on items your family eats frequently when it is on sale and you have coupons.

14 Renee Evenson December 14, 2008 at 11:26 pm

We eat a lot of homemade soups during the winter. It is a great way to stretch the budget!

15 Chrissy December 14, 2008 at 11:49 pm

I already subscribe :D

Tip number 3.. really this is just common sense, but it’s always worth repeating and is certainly something that is easy to live by. Never ever ever pay full price. Doesn’t matter if it’s food or toys or furniture or clothing. Darn near everything goes on sale at some point and when it does, buy extra so that you can wait to buy again when it’s on sale again. I buy several loaves of bread at a time when they’re buy one get one free. I will buy 2%, 1% or fat free milk interchangably because occasionally they will have only certain ones on sale. I do whatever I can to buy on sale and that can add up VERY quickly!

Tip # 1
I use balls of aluminum foil instead of dryer sheets. Takes the static out and makes the clothes soft and fluffy.

17 Jennifer December 15, 2008 at 12:01 am

Tip # 2
I’m a subscriber. I make my own powdered dishwasher detergent from salt, borax and baking soda.

18 Caryn Bailey December 15, 2008 at 12:09 am

We set the thermostat to 70 degrees in the winter, and 80 in the summer. We also use the “away” mode. This saves us money on our bill. We also wash clothes in cold water!

I wrote a review of your blog at stumble (under cliffordsmom). My third money saving tip is this: I cook dinner each night for 6, even though we have 5 in our family. My husband takes the extra serving to work for his lunch the next day. This is much healthier for him and saves at least $5/work day.

20 Chrissy December 15, 2008 at 12:15 am

Useless blog posted here http://muddlingthroughit.blogspot.com/2008/12/deal-seeking-mom-has-done-it-again-want.html :P

Another tip… hmm. My 6 year old recently had two classmates over for a playdate. When my kids were younger, I did a LOT more craft things with them because they were fun and the kids enjoyed them. We got away from them as they got older and I had another child. Well recently I stocked up on craft items when I stumbled on an amazing sale and we’ve rediscovered them. My tip? Family time. You don’t need to see the movies in the theatre, you don’t need to go out to have fun. Simple and cheap things like doing little crafts at home are great budget minders, bonding moments and memory makers all rolled into one! Family of five seeing a movie at the theatre…. $70+. Family of five home making holiday luminaries… $6. Keepsakes and memories= free.

22 Rachel December 15, 2008 at 12:28 am

Tip 2- Take your empty bottles to a grocery store where they have the recycling machines. You will get a few bucks back.

23 Rachel December 15, 2008 at 12:36 am

I stumbled upon it :)
Tip 3-
No appetizers or desserts eating out. The calories aren’t needed anyway.

Another great tip – switch out your bulbs with CEF bulbs! They’re cheap at Walmart right now (make sure they’re Energy Star compliant). You’ll save energy AND help the environment!

I’m not saying this because Wal Mart is sponsoring this giveaway….But, Walmart.com is an excellent source for saving money. Not only are the prices wonderful, but the ship to store option saves a lot of time and money since you’re not paying shipping. And if there is not a ship to store option on an item, there is usually 97 cent shipping.
Staying out of stores works for me and I get my shopping done with walmart.com.

32 Brenda December 15, 2008 at 1:36 am

Skip the espresso stand for one day and pack your lunch, instead of eating out.

35 Bonny S. December 15, 2008 at 4:54 am

I subscribed with the e-mail newsletter.

Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFLs) bulbs. These bulbs use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer. You will save energy and money.

36 Bonny S. December 15, 2008 at 5:18 am

I blogged about this giveaway @ http://quicktattletail.blogspot.com/

Buy energy efficient appliances. Look for the Energy Star on appliances. More efficient appliances cost more, but you make up the extra cost and then some over the life of the product. It will save you money and energy.

37 Mom of 8 Blessings December 15, 2008 at 6:16 am

You can save more than $1 a day by purchasing high quality, used clothing for your family from yard sales. I am able to supply about 90%+ of our wardrobe needs this way, and I get such a charge out of leaving the house with $20 and returning with a carful of things that we need. It’s great! Newbies to this technique might want to search newspaper or local craigslist ads for church or community sales. These will normally have a LOT of stuff, making your success a sure thing. Bargaining is part of the game, so be sure to ask for lower prices (unless they are already ridiculously low or the seller appears to be in need).

38 Kendra December 15, 2008 at 7:22 am

Tip #1: It just dawned on me this morning how much money we are saving by using refillable water bottles! Ours are by Rubbermaid. Between my husband and myself, we are certainly saving more than $1.00 per day, and the environment!

I am an email subscriber :)

Tip #2: Pack your lunch! Packing a yummy lunch rather than eating out will save your family way more than $1.00 per day immediately. It will also save you money long-term by reducing medical bills due to the fattening and artery-clogging effects of fast fooding!

40 Kendra December 15, 2008 at 7:32 am

Twittered about your contest @KendraAnn

Tip #3: Be conscientious about conserving energy in your home. Replace all light bulbs with CFLs, use a water heater blanket, hang clothes up to dry (will help re humidify your house while the heater is on!), use a programmable thermostat, seal leaks and drafts, unplug appliances when they’re not in use.

41 Nicole December 15, 2008 at 8:45 am

Tip#1 this will sound weird but if you dice your meat up into tiny pieces instead of chunks, you use less meat and even carnivorous hubby won’t notice.

42 Nicole December 15, 2008 at 8:48 am

Tip # 2 I twittered – http://twitter.com/triggrickswife

use a timer for showers. It will hep you realize the amount of time you stay in and cut back on water use.

43 Amy December 15, 2008 at 9:29 am

Every morning, I turn the thermostat down while we’re not home, make sure every light is off, and unplug appliances like the coffee pot.

44 Amy December 15, 2008 at 9:32 am

I just subscribed, and another money saving tip is to change all light bulbs to CFLs.

45 Michelle December 15, 2008 at 9:39 am

Instead of eating out everyday for lunch, I stock up on canned soups and put them in my desk at work, I always have a lunch that costs about $2 dollars per day. That saves a lot more than $1 a day if you were going to eat out.

46 Frances December 15, 2008 at 9:40 am

I save a lot of money by shopping for what is on sale – especially meat. For example, I buy the large family size boneless pork loin which is usually around 10-13lbs. @ $1.99/lb. I bring it home and cut it up into forzen ziploc packages of 6 of either boneless pork chops or boneless pork roasts. I usually get around 6 meals out of one loin. I freeze them. They are way less expensive than paying the 3.99 and up for the boneless pork chops. I do this with other meats as well. I have them already portioned for the size my family needs and write on the bag how many servings it contains. I love doing the calculation of how much we save – especially when you compare it to the price if you eat out! My family gets a kick out of this too!

47 Donna Holmberg December 15, 2008 at 9:41 am

I have given up my morning cup of WaWa, Dunkin Donuts, and/or Starbucks coffee and switched to drinking tea (which I buy by the box and only costs me $3 per box of 20 bags. This is saving me a TON of money, and because I’m usually drinking decaffinated tea, it’s also healthier for me – I do drink the caffinated kind when I’m desperately in need of a boost..

48 Michelle December 15, 2008 at 9:42 am

Weeknights, I cook everyday of the week. But usually on one of those days I will cook a whole bag of frozen tysons chicken breasts, so that the next night I can cut up the leftovers and use them in a chicken casserole of types. Making two dinners at the cost of one. Plus saving time on the main entree.

49 Michelle December 15, 2008 at 9:45 am

In our kitchen I have a drawer dedicated to hand towels, we use these for everything from cleaning up spills, to cleaning off faces. It saves trees and money by not purchasing paper towels. We can wash the towels after every use!

50 crystal December 15, 2008 at 9:47 am

Stay home! That’s my tip. :O)
