I’ve hinted about it for days now, and finally here it is – your chance to win a $500 Walmart gift card!!!
Just in time to make your holidays a little happier, Nickelodeon and Walmart have teamed up to offer this fabulous contest hosted by the Elevenmoms.
Yep, that’s right – each Elevenmom is giving away one $500 gift card on her blog, so you have 20 chances to win! Find details on the Elevenmoms site on how you can enter to win each one. Please note that you may only win once.
So who wants to add $500 to their holiday budget? You didn’t really think I was going to make this EASY for you, did you? You’re going to have to work a little bit for a prize this big.
In light of the tough economic times, this contest is all about discovering new ways to help each other save money. Yesterday I wrote a post detailing seven easy ways to cut at least $1 from your budget per day in the hopes that it would inspire you to participate in The One Dollar Give. I only just scratched the surface though, and I know that you all have some amazing tips to share as well.
So there you go – holiday-themed or not, I want you to share your best methods for cutting back by at least $1 a day!
Methods of Entry*
Every reader can submit up to three (3) different tips to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, or three for up to a total of 3 entries!!!
YOU MUST LEAVE A TIP WITH EACH ENTRY. ENTRIES THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES BELOW WILL BE DELETED.
1. Leave a comment sharing your best money-saving tip to cut at least $1 a day out of your budget!
2. Subscribe to my feed via RSS or email and leave a separate comment letting me know you have done so along with another money-saving tip. If you’re already a subscriber, simply leave a separate comment letting me know you’re already subscribed along with another money-saving tip. Lovin’ my subscribers! You guys make this all possible.
3. Spread the word about this contest in some manner and come back and leave a link in a separate comment along with another money-saving tip. If you have a blog, you can blog about it. But if you don’t have a blog, you’re not at a disadvantage. You could review and Stumble it. You could Twitter it. You could post about it in a forum. Use your imagination!
*Please read the rules for entering and the timeline information carefully as this contest differs from the usual giveaways that I host.
It is important that you leave a separate comment for each type of entry because each comment is equal to one entry. Sorry to harp on this, but it really is that important to tally and select the winner easily, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me simplify the process!
Prize:
1 $500 Walmart Gift Card
This giveaway ends at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Monday, December 15th. The judges will select ten of their favorite entries to be highlighted on Deal Seeking Mom, and I’ll use Random.org to select the winning comment. The winner will be posted on Tuesday, December 16th, and the prize will be mailed out on December 17th. Good luck!

Tip: make a budget and stick to it.
Coupon and stockpile – this can save you hundreds of dollars, much more than $1 a day!
I am a subscriber, and here is another tip – never shop unprepared! Check websites and promos before you go, get your Qs together, make a list and stick to it. And, once in the store – avoid impulse purchases: those can break the bank.
My savings tip for Mom’s with small children is to find out places in your community that has free activities for children. In my community we have a children’s museum that is free, the library has several free play days, music classes, and you can also rent out Disney and other childrens movies for free!

To save a $1 a day, I can avoid buying water bottles at the store, by refilling a bottled water from my filtered water out of my refridgerator. I can also make sure my kids take their own lunch to school instead of eating a school lunch!

Save gas money this holiday by carpooling when shopping!
Save $1 or more a day by eating at home instead of out on the run, then put that $1 in a jar to save for later, at the end of 30 days you will have saved $30!
entry #1 I subscribed via email! Should have done so long ago!
Tip– Write down where every penny goes for a couple of weeks and it should become obvious where your money is going, including where it shouldn’t.
Use cartoon/comic section of newspapers to wrap gifts, helps the enviroment and no need to buy wrapping paper!
entry #2
Tip–When you buy snacks(crackers, cookies, chips, etc.), immediately re-package them into individual serving sizes. It is far easier to limit consumption, therefore needing to buy less often.
entry #3
Tip–Have everyone empty their change into a jar every day. This adds up quickly. Maybe more than a dollar a day.
Tip # 3
We bought High Effficeny Washer & dryer so now I buy the laundry soap that has the softer in it, it is also concentrated so I use less & do not have to buy softner!! I have subscribed to Twitter & posted on their!!
Use the redbox codes to rent movies for free.
My tip to save $1 a day or more is to save your leftover veggies in a container in a freezer. When it’s full you make veggie soup from the veggies and homemade stock!

I swap baby clothes with friends. I don’t have to spend as much on clothing and have a wide variety to choose from.
Use public transportation whenever you can instead of driving.
I pack my husband his drink in his lunch and he has a large cup for water so he won’t hit the vending machine to buy a pop (or two or three) throughout the day!

Pack snacks for your kids when you go grocery shopping so you’re not buying expensive snacks in the checkout line at the store or being tempted to “just grab something” from the fast food restaurants!
I just made a post on my blog about your contest!

Stop buying bottled water or sodas. Get yourself a refillable bottle and use your tap!
I just subscribed to your website!
I do Once-a-Month cooking/freezer meals. It helps me with menu planning and with 3 kids 4 and under- I only have to make one very short trip to the store each week for milk and produce. This saves tons of time and money (from impulse buying) and my sanity!

I work at home and my wife is home with our daughter so we sold our second car to save money.
One way I save money is knowing the “special” days at fast food or sit-down restaurants and only going out on those days. For example, Tuesday in my town Burger King has cheeseburgers for $0.69 and my mom gave me a coupon book for 10 free “value sized fries”. I end up spending less than a dollar (I get water from the water cooler at work or bring a drink from home) and I get a break from leftovers, frozen meals, or sandwiches once a week and a change in scenery.
we save money by using a trac-phone. it’s great for emergencies and costs us much less than a plan!

My third money-saving tip is to identify one non-essential service that you could do without, and try it for one month. Consider canceling your cable subscription, caller ID, gym membership, or movie rental or magazine subscription. Then find an alternative: rent from the library, go to the park, use your answering machine. Try it for just one month. If you find you can’t live without this service, you can always sign up again. But you may realize that you didn’t really need it after all. Plus, you’ll definitely be saving $1 a day!

we also save a large amount of money by shopping at aldi, a discount supermarket.
YARD SALING!
I facebooked about this.

Don’t buy small calorie counting packs. Buy larger quantities (or bulk) and count out servings yourself and place in plastic bags or better yet, in a small reusuable container. This way you arn’t charged for the packaging cost of the small packs and you create less trash!
Stop paying for cable!! So many shows are available to watch online now. I get local and national news via my t.v. antenna or NPR.
Tip #1 – Pack my lunch every day. It saves me lots of money.

Don’t do drive-thru: most of the ingredients that are in what I am eating, costs the same through the supermarket. Plus: I get more than 1 serving out of the deal. It might cost more up front to cook food, but in the end, it comes out to your advantage to cook your own food.

http://twitter.com/alkalineshock – I tweeted about the contest. It also x-posts on my blog and on facebook.
Tip #3 – Switch out 1 light bulb with an energy efficient light bulb. It saves me about $5/month which will more than pay for itself for the 5 years the light bulb is guaranteed to work for.
Tiffany´s last blog post..My Best Money-Saving Holiday Tip
Use plastic window kits and energy saving drapery panels to keep the inside temperature inside and the outside temperature outside. If your gas bill is $300 a month it will save you $100 (or more) a month.

I save by not using ‘throw aways’ when I can use a reusable. Reusable shopping bags rather than store bags, dishes rather than paper plates, towels and washcloths instead of paper towels. Cloth napkins instead of paper napkins, etc.
Also, because it’s too good not to share, I use about half the recommended laundry detergent and wash most loads (except socks and underwear) in cold water now. Less soap makes things softer and cleaner.
Tip #1:
Never EVER buy garbage bags. Use the plastic bags from the grocery store to line indoor home garbage cans. Use larger shopping bags or dry cleaning bags for larger items. Use the paper bags for recycling paper waste and material from your shredder. Why pay for something you’re going to throw away anyway?

Tip #2:
Like the convenience of a liquid soap near your bath or kitchen sink? Purchase a foam soap container from the “fancy bath and body-type store. (I’ve gotten them on sale @ 3/$5…a one-time investment.) Then NEVER purchase another again: When you’re ready for a refill, simply add 1/3 liquid soap (from a dollar-type store) and 3/4 water. Shake to mix. This gives the right consistency and your soap will go 3 times as far!
You can add a little food coloring and fragrance if you want to change it up, but it isn’t necessary. I like to use different colors to match the seasons or my room decor.

Tip #3:
Don’t ever buy bread crumbs, make them!
Save the end pieces and odd pieces from every loaf of bread, even if they are getting a little dry. Let them accumulate in an empty bread bag in your freezer until you have a “critical mass.” (I generally do this when I have 1-2 bags full.) Lay all the pieces out onto cookie sheets and bake at low heat (200 degrees) for 40 minutes or so, turning once. Next, pop them into a food processor to turn them into crumbs. You can add seasoning if you like. (I generally don’t because this makes them easier to change up when I want to make a specific recipe.) I store them in a plastic container in my freezer so they are always ready for recipes!
NOTE: This is a good way to get whole wheat bread crumbs… healthier!

I didn’t read everyone’s so I don’t know if this has been said but it’s the first thing that popped into my mind that I know I could do to save $1 a day………….not buy coffee, but make at home instead. It’s just so easy to go through that drive thru and order it!
Thanks for the giveaway!

Another way I could save $1 a day is probably if I shut the tv off when we aren’t watching it. It’s a bad habit to leave it on in the background.
Thanks!

Do errands one day a week. By staying out of the stores the other 6 days, you won’t spend money.
Coupons! I have recently returned to using coupons and I am saving way more than $30 a month! I don’t even have to go to the effort of clipping them, as my kindergarteners love any excuse to use scissors! All I have to do is sort them when the clipping is done.

I’m subscribed – through RSS feed, I think. I’ve been working with the kids to save money by turning off the lights and tv when not in use. (That’s a job in itself!) Thanks for the chance at this great prize.

tip #1: Arm yourself with easy to grab snacks on the run for the kiddos. With 3 little ones, you would think this would be no-brainer for me, but now that my youngest is 2 and i no longer tote around the diaper bag, I cannot tell you how many times I forget to have snacks on the ready and have to buy something out of desperation at the store to make it thru our errands!
Use the Paperback Swap website. My library is really hard to get newer books from, and since my preschool moved, its no longer on my way anywhere, so I signed up for Paperback swap—a great way to recycle your old titles for new books that you want to read!
I go to the stores early in the morning for half off discounts. I do this every few days and save bundle on groceries.
#3…stock up when you get the best deals—many of us do this when grocery shopping, but use the same method when buying other things too! I love Bath and Body works hand soaps and wallflower room fragrances, but they are a major splurge on my budget. I have learned what the “best” deals are on these items, and when they offer them a few times a year at that best price, I combine coupons and stock up! The soaps and hand sanitizers also make nice gift bag fillers to have on hand!
Hi, I’m new here! It’s always nice to hear from other mom’s trying to save money!! It’s like my mother used to say, if it’s cold…put on a sweater and some warm socks!
I also plan my meals at least two weeks in advance. That way, I’m not running to the grocery store for something small, and end up buying stuff I don’t need!

In many areas, free local papers are delivered as a standard service. You can just write or call your local paper provider. And make sure to recycle it when your are done.

We grow our own herbs. You can even grow your own veggies. That’s few things you can take off of your shopping list.
