Money-Making Week Recap: Are You In?

by Tara Kuczykowski on October 26, 2008 · 7 comments

I received a lot of very positive feedback on last week’s Money-Making Week. We talked about ways to earn money from home such as oneline surveys, general transcription, and blogging for income, as well as how to make the money that you earn work harder by paying yourself first.

In fact, it was such a hit that I’d like to keep the series going on Money-Making Mondays. I actually held several other work-at-home positions such as legal document coding, customer service, and data entry before I settled on general transcription as my career of choice, and I’d like to share more about each of those with you. I’ll also continue (well, actually go back to the beginning and start) the blogging for income series.

Plus I’ve had several work-at-home moms contact me about submitting guests posts to talk about ways that they earn an income from home, so I’m excited to share their stories with you as well!

If you have an income-earning idea you’d like to share with Deal Seeking Mom readers, please shoot me an email at dealseekingmom (at) gmail (dot) com.

Finally, I want to let you all know about a fabulous opportunity that my good friend Jessica of JessicaKnows has for you all.

15 Days of Marketing with Jessica Knows

Head over to her site to register for 15 Days of Marketing with Jessica Knows, a 15-day marketing workshop especially for moms. Jessica is amazingly talented and intelligent, and I’m thoroughly looking forward to participating in this series on learning, networking, and strategizing which begins November 1st.

Are you in? I know I am!!!

Make Your Money Work for You: Pay Yourself First

by Tara Kuczykowski on October 24, 2008 · 6 comments

For Money-Making Week we’ve been talking about ways you can earn money from home. So far we’ve covered taking surveys, general transcription, and using affiliate links to monetize your blog. Now make your extra income work harder for you.

According to Redbook magazine, a recent study by VISA found that nearly half of all Americans lose track of an average of $45 a week. Those afternoon vending machine trips and spontaneous magazine purchases that you grabbed while waiting to check out really add up!

What would happen if instead you tossed an inexpensive (and probably healthier) snack in your purse each morning and used that money to pay yourself instead?

Pay yourself first! It really is just that simple. Set a target amount that you will pay yourself each week, and set up an automatic transfer that will deduct that amount from your checking account directly into a high-interest savings account. I guarantee after a few weeks you won’t even miss it.  Using this method our family was able to completely fund our Myrtle Beach vacation over the summer even as my husband was laid off for four months.

They key to making this work for me is to put it in an online account that I don’t have immediate access to. This forces me to think carefully about any withdrawals I make and consider if they are a true necessity. It takes 3-5 business days to have the money transferred back to my checking account, so I can’t withdraw money for a spur of the moment purchase.

Up until recently I was using ING Direct for this purpose. However, I recently discovered that FNBO Direct has a 2.15% interest rate, as compared to only 1.65% with ING Direct. While this is a small difference, as a Deal Seeking Mom, I’m never satisfied unless I get the most for my money, so I switched banks.

Opening my account was very easy. FNBO offers no monthly fees, no minimum balance, and you can open your account with as little as $1. I recommend that you select no when asked if you want an ATM card to make it harder to withdraw money on a whim. Or as an alternative you could use the tried and true method of freezing it in a block of ice. The process was quick and painless, and I’ve been very satisfied with my online savings account thus far.

You work hard for your money, so why shouldn’t your money work hard for you as well?

Do you pay yourself first?  Why or why not?  Even $5 a week is a good start and you can increase it as you’re able.  The interest earnings are just an added bonus!

Blogging for Income: Affiliate Sites

by Tara Kuczykowski on October 22, 2008 · 15 comments

Learning how to monetize a blog actually probably isn’t the ideal place to start a blogging for income series, but because this is Money-Making Week, it’s where I’m going to begin. Hopefully this will give those of you that already have blogs a starting point, and for those of you thinking about blogging, I’ll come back to getting started over the coming weeks.

There are many ways to earn an income from blogging. You can use AdSense, ad networks, affiliate sites, sell your own products, do paid posts and on and on. But don’t be fooled into thinking that blogging is a get-rich-quick ticket. It’s hard work, and it can be very discouraging when you’re starting out with little traffic and few comments.

(BTW readers, bloggers LOVE comments. Even if you just take a moment to say, “Thanks, that post really helped me out,” I guarantee you’ll make someone’s day!)

With so many methods, it’s only natural that some will work for some people while not for others. It’s important to try a variety to see what works best for you. I’ve experimented with several, and one of my favorite methods is affiliate marketing.

So what’s so special about affiliate marketing? Basically it’s a win for me and a win for my readers! My readers get to sign up for great samples and other offers, and I get paid a little bit to offer them the opportunity. Of course not every sample I blog about earns me money. In fact most of them don’t, but it’s always a nice incentive when they do!

Some important tips about affiliate marketing:

  • Be selective. Before you promote an offer on your blog, look at the landing page that your affiliate link takes you to.  Is it something that you would feel comfortable signing up for?  If in doubt, you can email your rep at the affiliate network for additional details.  You don’t want to damage the trust your readers have placed in you by having them register for a scam.
  • Do your homework. Be sure to pay close attention to the terms and conditions regarding an offer.  Some offers can’t be offered as a text link.  Some can be sent in an email format.  Some offers can be incentivized meaning you can offer a bonus if a readers takes advantage of the opportunity.  Just be sure that you read thoroughly and understand before you promote.  Again, you can ask your rep for help if you have any questions.
  • Don’t overdo it. Constantly bombarding your readers with affiliate links and placing tons of banners and ads in your sidebars will only turn them off.  Select a few good offers to promote and focus on them.
  • Personalize it. If you’ve had a personal experience with the company or offer you are promoting, tell your readers about it.  They’re reading your blog because they like what you have to say, so if you can approach them with an insider’s point of view, they’ll be that much more likely to take action.

There are literally thousands of different affiliate companies out there.  The ones I’ve signed on with probably aren’t even a drop in the bucket, but many were sites that were recommended to me when I started out, so I’d like to share them with my readers as well.

Recommended affiliate companies:

As I mentioned before, you’re probably not going to make big bucks using these companies, but using them strategically can generate some nice pocket change or give you a little breathing room in your budget.

Getting Started in General Transcription

by Tara Kuczykowski on October 21, 2008 · 59 comments

Hopefully you’ve had a chance to read my post on working at home as a transcriptionist. As promised, I’m back to give you all some information on how you can get started working at home in the transcription industry!

So how do you get started? Explaining it all in one post is nearly impossible, but if you are interested in pursuing transcription as a career, here are the steps to get you headed in the right direction.

  • Find a pair of quality headphones.
  • Download Express Scribe and install Microsoft Word if it’s not already on your computer.
  • Brush up on your grammar rules.
  • Learn how to research words, names and terms online.
  • Download audio from a variety of sources and begin practicing.
  • Create or brush up your résumé and cover letter.
  • Begin applying as an independent contractor.
  • Look for projects on Guru, Elance and/or Craigslist.
  • Continue developing your skills and looking for ways to increase productivity.

Posts on all of these aspects can be found interspersed on Transcription Talk. However, if you’re one of those people that need things laid out in an orderly and step-by-step fashion, I recommend purchasing General Transcription 101.

When my partners and I started Transcription Talk, our mission was to help other moms not only get started working at home as transcriptionists but also to give them the tools to improve their skills and speed so that they can earn more in less time giving them more availability for their family. We made a commitment to blog daily towards this goal; however, we quickly realized that a daily blog of this sort in addition to our other obligations was taking too much time away from our own families.

We made the difficult decision to discontinue posting on Transcription Talk but not before we published our first transcription ebook, General Transcription 101: Your Complete Guide to Getting Started. We worked very hard to make sure that General Transcription 101 walks the reader through each of the steps to getting started as a work-at-home transcriptionist. We had it reviewed by people just getting started, those considering the industry, experienced transcriptionists, and even professional editors. We did rewrites, design changes, and tweaked it more times than we can count.

All three of us are very proud of the end result, and we’ve received nothing but positive feedback from those who have purchased it. I’m hoping to hear that it’s helped some of you out as well!

Working from Home in General Transcription

by Tara Kuczykowski on October 21, 2008 · 24 comments

I mentioned recently that I was an accidental stay-at-home mom and found myself in the situation of trying to find a flexible, child-friendly work-at-home position.

Through much trial and error, I finally settled on general transcription as a means for providing supplemental income for our family. I’ve had several people email me about how they could find out more information about becoming a transcriptionist, so I wanted to share a little bit about the industry with you all.

General transcription is a wonderful opportunity for moms to look into.  Whereas many of the traditional home-based business opportunities require significant cash to start, you can get started doing general transcription for a very minimal investment.

In the three years that I’ve been doing this, I’ve been able to grow my income beyond what I ever thought was possible for an at-home position. The downturn in the economy directly impacted my family long before recent developments, and transcription allowed me to support my family on my income alone through my husband’s intermittent layoffs over the past two years.  While it’s a lot of hard work and definitely not a “get rich quick scheme,” I feel so blessed to have this wonderful source of income that provides me with the opportunity to stay at home with my five children.

Being a work-at-home mom is difficult at times; however, the benefits far outweigh any drawbacks for me.  Staying home to raise my children is only one of a number of benefits that transcription can afford.

Others include:

  • The hours and workload are flexible.
  • There is good – if not great – earnings potential.
  • I’m always learning something new.
  • It is a growing field that is not showing signs of slowing down.

While the benefits are many, success in this career will require hard work and perseverance on your part. The most common misconception that a lot of people have about transcription is that the only skill you need is the ability to type. The truth is that there’s a lot more than that involved. In order to have a successful career as a transcriptionist, you need to be able to listen, think and type at the same time. Additionally, one of the most important skills needed is to be able to actually take the spoken word and transcribe it in a way that fits grammar rules for written language so that it actually makes sense to the person reading it.

Questions to ask yourself if you’re considering transcription:

  • Do you enjoy reading, and do you keep up with current events?
  • Do you have a good grasp of basic grammar and spelling, or if not, are you willing to work hard to hone these skills?
  • Are you detail-oriented, and do you have the ability to follow instructions well?
  • Are you a self-starter, and do you have the drive to work independently with minimal supervision?
  • Do you take pride in your sense of professionalism and meeting your commitments in full?

If you’re just starting to consider transcription as a career, this may seem overwhelming to you, and that is not my intention.  It’s important to know that while you can make a decent living doing this work, it is not “easy money.” It takes a lot of hard work to develop the skills needed to succeed, and you must be committed to developing those skills or you will most likely give up before you reach the point where you are happy with your earnings.

Is transcription right for you? I can’t determine that for you. I can only tell you that after much research, this is the career that works best for me. But the benefits of this career are plentiful, and with dedication and hard work, there’s a good chance it’s the opportunity you’re looking for.

Getting started is fairly easy. Check out these action steps and/or consider purchasing our General Transcription 101: Your Complete Guide to Getting Started ebook package!

Stretch Your Budget: Earn Money with Online Surveys

I first blogged about earning money from online surveys for Christmas in July. As we are quickly approaching the holiday season, I thought I’d revisit the subject for Money-Making Week.

With only 65 days left until Christmas, it’s probably too late to earn enough money to cash out and receive a check before then, but you can get a head start on the new year by starting now!

One of the easiest ways I’ve found to earn a little extra money is with paid surveys.
While I don’t have much time to invest in survey taking these days, the great thing is you can spend as much or as little time on this endeavor as YOU want to invest. If a survey interests you, take it; if it doesn’t, just delete the email.* It’s true that some companies reward you with more frequent surveys the more you fill out for them, but you are never obligated to take any of them. Furthermore, you should never pay for access to surveys. There are plenty of legitimate sites that you can sign up with directly with no fees whatsoever.

*Before signing up for any survey sites, please take a moment to read my post on protecting your personal information.

The following is a list of legitimate survey companies that I have firsthand experience with, e.g., I have taken surveys for them, cashed out, and most importantly, I have been PAID. It’s very simple to get started. Just register, fill out your profile information, and then they will email you with survey opportunities that match up with your profile. Generally you have to reach a certain threshold before you can cash out, and this amount varies by company. Some survey sites may offer points that you redeem for gifts and gift cards in lieu of cash, so be sure to read the details before you sign up if that doesn’t interest you.

Zoom Panel

Ipsos i-Say Panel

Memolink

Opinion Outpost

American Consumer Opinion Panel

The following are some additional survey sites that I came across. While I can’t claim to have firsthand experience with them, I did check them out and they appear to be legit. If you have information to the contrary, please let me know and I will remove it from the list ASAP!

SurveySpot

Global Test Market

If you’ve had a good experience with a survey site that’s not listed here, I’d love to hear from you!
