I saw something on TV recently about the "cash for gold" things - basically it related that they can send you a check for a minimal amount (not nearly what your items are worth), & you have the option of accepting their offer or getting your items back. The catch is, there's a very small time window for you to have the "return request" back in their hands & it's a virtually impossible time frame to meet. It's legal because they make the offer to return your stuff, and pay you, and it's "not their fault you can't get the return form back in time". So you've sold your stuff for pennies, i.e. a legal scam.

I did the cash for gold thing. I turned in some charm bracelets that I had gotten for free and got $10.00 for it. They send you the stuff to mail it in and then send you a check afterwards. If you don't agree on the money you can send the check back within a week I think and get your jewelry back. So it's not a scam, I liked getting $10.00 for stuff I don't use and it was easy to do.

I don't know about the cash for gold thing. My FIL is a jeweler, and a gold expert (I guess that is what u call it... he knows his stuff, lol), and he thinks that it might be a scam. Check around local jewelry stores and/or pawn shops to compare b4 u send ur items off to someone.

I've never done the mail-in gold thing, but several people I work with go to those "gold parties", where someone comes in and pays cash for your old gold jewelry. My friend got $300 for one of those gold rope necklaces that were really in in the 80's (she called it her Mr. T starter set, LOL.) She said she paid around $350, so not bad $$ for something she doesn't wear anymore.
