It's well known that less than 5% of all issued coupons are redeemed at stores. I do use coupons, a lot. I try to do the best I can, not be a pest of myself, and I do try to be honest and ethical. I do not see stores as being "generous".
STORES ARE OUT TO MAKE A PROFIT. End of story! If they did not make a profit, they would not exist. They issue these coupons to GET PEOPLE TO SPEND MORE MONEY!

I rarely shopped at CVS until June. Then I read a money saving blog that caught me on to the great deals. But I still spend money, whereas before they got ZERO dollars from me. So, they are in fact making money off me. They do get reimbursed for all manufacturers coupons, and like I noted above, so few of them are actually redeemed that it's practically an industry joke. However, for those of us who do budget carefully, they do add up to big savings.

I am actually pretty embarrassed by how difficult it has been for me to throw away all my duplicate coupons. Clearly I needed these posts right now. I wonder why so many of us are being convicted about this same thing at the same time??

I'm grateful to those who have posted here for reminding me once again to check my "moral compass".

I confess to having used the Richmond Parents coupons on multiple purchases this month (especially because I'm local and have the actual magazine)and have accumulated quite a storehouse of supplies for close to $0 OOP.

But my mind has not been easy in reflecting on the Golden Rule...if I owned the business, would I want my customers to abuse coupons issued as incentives to draw new purchasers by using them over & over again? I know the answer is no.

What's right is right - and what's wrong (not saying the coupon practice IS but...) is wrong, regardless whether CVS is showing profits. Is it ethical to cheat on taxes if you think the Federal Gov't wastes money? In my book, no, but sometimes I push the limit and have to remind myself whether I am living the example I want to set.

im new to couponing, im a little confused by all this. the beauty books are now for sale in my store for 99 cents. these coupons say the same thing as the 2/10. So why would they let you buy more than one book if you cant use the coupons more than once? i see alot of people using the skin care to get tons of stuff for free. not saying its right but i would really like to know what the policy is??! i thought it was one per customer per visit? but now im questioning it. i dont want to do anything illegal, or wrong so im not going to use them. but has anyone heard the rules from cvs??

I'm very happy to see this post. Wednesday I went to do my usual run at CVS and took in my "$2.00 off CVS skin product" coupon. when I presented it the cashier screamed "I knew it!" She picked up a pile of probably 20 coupons that were in black in white that two ladies had used that morning. She than explained that she had found them using the copier and printing more off to use that day. They pretty much told me they would no longer be taking coupons printed from the internet. I apologized and explained that I didn't realize it was an issue. She took my coupon and sent me on my way. But as I was leaving they discussed that the manager was no longer excepting printed coupons.
*sigh* all because people couldn't be honest!

I understood it the same way as this person who said, "As I understand it, coupon terminology like "one per person" or "one per customer" is generally accepted to mean "per transaction." Just like "one per purchase" means per each item purchased, not the whole transaction."

i have no problem at all using the printable coupons more than one time and sometimes more than once in one transaction. then again, i shop at one store and before i ever used them, i showed them to the manager, informed him of the source and asked how he felt them being redeemed in his store. he said it was fine with him and often encourages my couponing (giving me CVS beauty book coupons, showing me where hard-to-find ECB producing items are, informing me of hidden deals, etc). so i have no problem with it because i feel that i was upfront and honest from the beginning, and have always acted according to the coupon usage rules he's put down. the 41 million dollar CVS profit from last quarter tells me i'm not damaging the company's revenue too much :)

I'm so glad you posted this. Honestly, I had never read the fine print and have already used the coupon at least twice. I will throw away the rest of my copies, though. I wouldn't want to do anything dishonest and now that I know what the fine print says, I won't use it again.

I agree with the original poster. I have only used the coupon once. it doesnt seem honest to me.
If the casier forgot to scan a $2 item at any store, I would tell them. isnt this kind of the same thing?

Thank you so much for opening up an honest discussion of this issue. I think that CVS is very generous with their savings programs, and that we ought to ethically stick to the rules they have set up. I don't think that "one per purchase" and "one per customer" stem from the same line of reasoning. One person can make multiple purchases or multiple transactions. However, there is only ONE of me, and I am allowed "one per customer".

Thanks for being honest enough to open a discussion!
Goodwife H.

I agree with this post. I actually emailed corporate to find out what their take on the situation would be. I was told that the coupons found on the internet in magazines, etc. should not be accepted in the stores. Only the original copies in the magazines and newspapers are intended to be used, and obviously, only used once.
Before emailing customer service, I had been struggling with this same question. It seemed that to use these coupons over and over would be taking advantage of the great deals that we get already at CVS. As a result, I only use the coupons that are emailed to me by the ExtraCare customer service. I'm glad this question was brought up.

I agree with others. I am new to couponing but too am a christian and first and foremost want to be honest and honor Jesus with all that he has entrusted to me and my family. I had 2 prints for my stuff this weekend however I am not going to use them. I was having internal questioning anyways (which i should have listened too) I am in no way trying to make anyone feel bad for what they chose this is just what I have chosen to do and what i feel is right for me

This could also be taken further when CVS changed the wording on all their ECB deals from the terminology "per card" to "per household". If you have more than one card- do you get the deals for each card?

Personally, I follow what it says, so if it says, one per household then I print it only one time, or do it on just one card. It is hard enough going there with some of the cashiers not knowing coupon rules.

I think it is an indicator with CVS with them cutting back on their "free monthly deals". Which is a shame because I am trying to tell others the joy of CVS and they aren't seeing what I used to get.

Sarah
www.thebargainscout.com

I have had an internal conflict about it. I sort of figured if the computers were allowing it why not. Since seeing your post I don't feel like I can rationalize this anymore. Thanks for holding us accountable and honest. I'm definitely convicted that I need to change my practices as Jesus Christ is my provider, and I don't need to abuse the system or as I really see it steal to save a couple bucks.

As I understand it, coupon terminology like "one per person" or "one per customer" is generally accepted to mean "per transaction." Just like "one per purchase" means per each item purchased, not the whole transaction.

I am completely new to the whole "couponing" way of life. I've just started printing some coupons online and have been hearing about the deals at CVS, but have never taken part in the action. I guess that I've already started thinking about the honesty of the whole process. I take the terms of the coupons very serious just because I'm afraid that I might somehow do something wrong unknowingly. But I do have a concern that there are people who greatly misuse the whole coupon process. I guess it's so important to have a good moral compass.

Well, I have used them several times. I had seen several bloggers post deals with these coupons, and didn't think anything of printing them lots of times. I have to say I didn't read the coupon, and didn't realize it said: "one coupon per customer", even though I should have. After reading this post, I won't use them again, because I too try to be honest in my coupon use, so the stores will keep having them. I guess the problem is, that there are many people who simply have no regards to ethics. For example, I feel that it's wrong for one person to have more than 1 CVS card. Maybe if you have one, and your husband has one. Maybe. But I think that should be 1 per household too. What do you think?

Have you seen the profits that CVS makes? I don't think they'd make these coupons available if they were losing money.

I don't overly abuse them and I do buy quite a bit at CVS which is on sale but sometimes when I don't have coupons.

I don't feel guilty using the 2/10 over and over. I see people there buying tons of stuff with no q's whatsoever...so they're doing alright.

I missed the "glory days" of WAGS and CVS as I just started Couponing when I became unemployed.

They aren't losing money on these transactions at all! Do you know what they make from prescriptions???????

Trust me, we ALL pay.

I agree with Leslie that using the $2/$10 coupon more than once is wrong. The coupon clearly states that it is intended for one time use. I love stockpiling and getting great deals, but also feel it is my responsbility to be honest.

I am glad that Leslie posed this question because I have had the same internal dilemma. How can people use this coupon over and over again, when it clearly states, "one per coupon per person"? I myself have only used it once.

I think this is a major problem with coupons being posted online. I think people taking advantage of the system. I think soon major companies will get a clue (such as Food Lion requesting their coupons be taken off A Full Cup) and there will be no more.

I too, am interested to hear what others think.

I must say that I am truly enjoying the CVS deals and their generosity. The ECB system they have going, has saved me substantial amounts of money these past few month, as well as their $/$$ coupons. For example, the other day I received one gallon of white milk, half gallon of chocolate milk, 6 buddies soaps, 2 - 2oz Cokes, a coke zero and 2 toothbrushes for about $.43. I have been lucky enough to be receiving $3/$15 about once a week from their scanner, and have been limiting my deals to that. I have not used the $2/$10 deal because something inside me makes me uncomfortable about presenting this type of internet coupon. I have seen many bloggers write about their many deals with these types of coupons and how they are using them over and over again. Although I am happy that they are able to get such great deals, it does make me nervous (and a bit sad) to know that sooner or later, CVS will probably be adjusting their system and coupons as Walgreens has, because of misuse, and many of us will be forced to reap the misfortune because of it. As it is, I am sometimes uncomfortable when presenting printed coupons in some stores, as I am questioned for how I am using them, seen as if I am trying to commit some type of fraud when using "legal" manufacturer internet coupons because of how some others in my area have presented them. Now I usually try to go to cashier's I know, better yet, that know me, so that I do not have to explain it to them. So my "weigh in about these coupons" is, if you are using them under the terms of the coupon, I am extact for you and the great deals you are receiving. If you are not using the coupons ethically, and under the terms of the coupon, I would ask you to reconsider so that we do not have negative long term effects because of this type of use. And if you do reconsider, my family and I thank you so much for doing your part in allowing us to continue to get such great deals from CVS. =)
