A really fun thing to do is go to the city (or if you aren’t close to one, anywhere really) with your children and write down your adventures to make your own book. You can just walk and observe. Take a lunch. Buying is not necessary.
For example, we went to pick up my mother at the train station and little things along the way made for a fun little story (there was a man with a pet pig in the terminal!). Instead of buying the books like “me and my mom”, make your own! Your kids will love it!

We watch for freebies in the newspaper. A local movie theater plays second run movies for free once a week. We ride bikes, play at the park, and take a cooler when we leave the house.
Stephanie
I purchased a Diego sprinkler last fall for the kids on clearance for $2.50!!! Can’t wait to try it out in our backyard as I know the kids will love it!
Pam
I live in a community that has alot to offer during the summer months and alot of them are free or family priced. We also have a great bike trail and we love taking rides every day.

We like to use the plastic pool in our yard. My son loves to play in water!

My favorite fun and frugal summer activity is making crafts from pieces of nature we find on walks – flowers, leaves, pinecones etc.
Julie
My girls help with a garden. Summer fun with benefits!
Cari
We love to go hiking, we pack the car with snacks and drinks at home (bought with coupons of course) and we wander a little. We always seem to find a new neat spot to explore.

We have a brown bag meal. Each person’s meal items (including napkins and silverware) are put in a bag. Whatever food item the kids pull out first they have to eat… so if the utensils don’t come out first then they have to use their hands. The kids think it’s hilarious!

My favorite thing to do is pack up a picnic lunch, and ride our bikes (with the “toddler trailer” attached) to the park. Or, because we’re lucky enough to live right on the MI shoreline, we’ll bike down to the beach!
Mark Nason
We go to the local City pool. It’s affordable and they have great big slides for the kids!
Tisa
Biking, tennis, walking, plus we purchase a yearly membership to the local zoos so we can go as much as want during the summer. ~ :)

The kids in my neighborhood like to get together in the evenings and play Ultimate frisbee, skateboard or play kickball in the field/parking lot in the church nearby. The church loves to have the kids around and often has adults and college kids out playing with the kids.

I wanted to add a comment on favorite summer things to do.
I get the glow bracelets at Michaels (local craft store-there are 20 for $1.00 in the pack) or $.99 cent store and play “glow tag” at night in the park. Our kids have so much fun! You can spit them up into colors/child and hide them, whoever finds all theirs first wins, or wear them and see the glow bobbles as they run after eachother. They also like to put them on the dog ‘s collar and watch the show! :)

We take a Picnic to the Free local Water Park. My daughter would rather do that than almost anything. Thanks for the chance.
