Frugal Feeding Tips for Babies and Toddlers

by Tara Kuczykowski on August 26, 2008 · 21 comments

When it comes to baby and toddler foods (among many others), manufacturers try to fool us into thinking that convenience trumps price. Don’t fall for this, ladies and gents! You can still totally have the convenience factor while saving some cash in the process.

In my first-ever vlog, I’m demonstrating with three different products just why you should pay attention to the price per oz. (or comparable measurement) on the “convenience” foods versus more traditional packages. Yes, I forced myself to be unfrugal all in the name of teaching my readers to save money! You can all thank me later . . .

So maybe those weren’t the most earth-shattering tips, but I’m willing to bet I have at least a few readers that are guilty of picking convenience over price without stopping to consider just what the bottom line is. Small savings like this can really add up!

And before I go, there’s one last thing I wanted to mention that I forgot to tell you all in the video – hey, this is harder than it looks! Anyhow, make sure to buy the fruit that’s packed in fruit juice. Babies are sweet enough without any extra added sugar!!!

So what are your best moneysaving tips on baby and toddler foods?

What a great reminder to pay attention to serving sizes!! Awesome video. I would also add that I bought the big jars of all natural applesauce rather than the baby food applesauce… BIG price difference!

That video vlog thingy is soo cool! My daughter never ate baby food! When she was ready, I went out and bought tons of it sooo excited to see her reaction! It wasn’t a great one either! We ended up feeding her what we eat, but we threw her’s in the food processer and blended it all up! That to me ended up being a huge money saver!!

I am new to your site so it was great to see what you look like=)

Thanks for all your wonderful tips!

although I don’t have babies anymore, it was a good reminder to watch cost per oz especially with convenient things…especially with kids in school.

A way to save even more on baby and toddler food (and a MUCH healthier way to feed them) is to use FRESH foods! Stick a REAL sweet potato in the microwave and mash it up, or grind up a fresh peach.

(I’m a Super Baby Food reader, if you couldn’t tell. :)

Tara – great vlog! With our youngest son (#3), he rarely gets any of that pre-packaged stuff since I’ve finally caught on (it only took two other children for me to get it). But, I will say when we went on vacation I picked up some of the graduates meals and they really are convenient – not cheap enough for me to buy for the convenience though.

Wonderful vlog! I wish I could listen to it (no sound on my old klunker of a desktop) but you look fabulous. Love the tip on using scissors for cutting up peaches (hey, I got alot out of watching even though I couldn’t hear ya talkin’!) Are you sure you aren’t a pro at creating videos? Can’t wait to watch more!

I commend you for putting yourself out there for everyone to see. That would have been just as easy to type but you went the extra mile. Thanks!

I like the video. Its a great addition to your wonderful site.

You are right though, so often people don’t consider the price of convenience.

Tara – way to go on your vlog! Great tips! But I have a question…is your kitchen always that clean?! ;)

We also buy Mott’s Healthy Harvest and Plus applesauce. Although it only comes in the convenience cups, it does provide those additional fruit flavors – blueberry, peach, country berry, etc. – for much less than a jar of baby food!

I got some of the Cheerioes small handy container. I bought it once and then I just refilled it in the diaper bag after buying the big box. Great tips!

A really great tip, it’s amazing how much they mark up those smaller packaged items. Even better (for the environment and the wallet)than a ziploc bag though would be a reusable container, have you seen some of the adorable ones they make for japanese bento boxes?

Your kitchen looks fabulous, and I love that magnetic spice rack thing!

I loved watching the video. You did a great job!

Great video!!! Great tips!

I LOVE my kitchen shears… best thing that ever happened in my attempts to feed four hungry kids (2 of which are twins) in a hurry!

Good job on the vlog. Well done. Also, thanks for the tips. I have a toddler and I appreciate your effort.

another good saving tip..make your own babyfood.its better and cheaper for you…and soooo easy…
i often buy fruit or vegi that are marked down..(to ripe, bruised or grapes off the vine)..i buy a big basket full of them for 2 dollars..when i have to much i put them in ice cube trays mark them and freeze it..so i have a great mix…and so much healthier than the jars…and way,way cheaper..

Nice job on your first vlog! It is a timely tip for me, and I am thrilled to learn that stage 1 and stage 2 are the same. We are making most of our baby food, but I love to buy the Gerber organic also–it is easier when we are on the go!

I enjoyed the video!! WHERE did you get that spice rack thing above your stove? I couldn’t stop staring it because I WANT one :)

Thanks, Drea! I got it at Meijer, but I’ve seen them other places as well. It certainly makes them convenient and easy to access!
